The charging system is.<\/p>\n<p>Once the alternator is confirmed as the fault, you face a question nobody prepares you for: repair the unit you have, or replace it? Both answers can be right. Which one is right depends on what failed inside, the condition of the rest of the unit, the parts available for your model, and how long you plan to keep the car.<\/p>\n<h2>What the alternator actually does<\/h2>\n<p>The alternator is a small generator bolted to the engine and driven by a belt. When the engine turns, it turns, and it makes electricity.<\/p>\n<p>That electricity does two jobs at once. It runs whatever is switched on in the car, and it puts back the charge the battery gave up starting the engine.
